Abstract: Human hair can be used as a monitoring tool for assessment of exposure load of certain toxicants. Hair were analysed for metals in a study among residents of estuarine areas of West Bengal (EAWB) and the results have been compared with those reported from South Pacific islanders. Residents of EAWB had low level of essential elements and high level of toxic elements in their hairs. This may be because of industrial activity in the area leading an increased intake of lead, cadmium and zinc. These elements are also contributing factors in reducing the copper in their hairs. Periodic monitoring and awareness regarding the entry of environmental chemical in to the body through food chain are suggested for promotive health care in such populations.
