Abstract: Present status of breeding and yield potential of cultivated species of grain amaranthus along with probabilities and method of increase in yield has been discussed in this research paper. It is believed that mostly yield potential is increased by exploitation of monogenic characters. Therefore, it is suggested that for quantitative improvement those characters should also be exploited which are polygenic. An ideal plant is that which is high yielding (preferably early maturity) and is of medium height. Use of biotechnology in breeding of grain amaranthus has been identified.
