| Abstract: | Most normal ionic conductors exhibit positive Liang effect (enhancement in ionic conductivity) when dispersed with insoluble (second phase), insulating, fine (submicron) particles. Some materials also show negative Liang effect (decrease in ionic conductivity due to dispersion). The conduction is primarily attributed to a space charge layer formation in the matrix phase at the matrix-particle interface. Characterization of space charge layer is however, incomplete. The paper reviews various possible conduction mechanisms in composite solid electrolytes. Anomalous results on PbX2-Al2O3 (X = Cl, Br, I) and CsCl- Al2O3 have been discussed in view of space charge layer mechanisms of conduction in composite solid electrolytes. |
