Abstract: There is a great potential of carbon sequestration under different plantations in about 7500 km long coastline of India. The objectives of this study were to examine the carbon sequestration dynamics under different age Casuarina plantation at Sagar Island, West Bengal. The organic carbon content in surface and sub-surface soil ranged from 25.8-58.8 and 12.1-25.7 tonn/hectare, respectively. Soil organic carbon under old Casuarina showed 15 times more value than the unplanted soil of the Sand Dunes. Rate of carbon sequestration was observed to be the maximum (4.3 tonn/year) under new Casuarina plantation near to the tree.
