Abstract: The quality of clinching joints is evaluated by visual and strength tests. This paper describes the shear strength of the round clinched joints of three sheets materials including the Al6061, Al5052, and Q235. The strength of mechanical clinching is affected by sheet thickness, the geometry of the tool, the material performance and the direction of the applied shear (i.e., the press joint orientation). To obtain the shear strength and reduce cost of the tensile tests, two equations for predicting the maximum failure load can be derived by using these parameters. A total of 180 shearing tests are conducted to check the maximum failure load obtained by predictive equations, and the results are in agreement with our predictions.
