Activated carbon cloth samples were prepared from viscose rayon based precursor pretreated with phosphoric acid. Carbonization and activation were carried out under carbon-dioxide atmosphere at 850°C for increasing soaking times. Characterization of the activated char samples was carried out by physical adsorption of nitrogen at 77K. Analytical data on the adsorption studies through various methods concluded that the chars prepared under present work differed significantly in their pore structure with those prepared at low soaking times and increasing maximum heat treatment temperatures (MHTT's). The chars prepared in the present study were essentially microporous in nature possessing a considerable amount of external surface, and comparatively low surface area. The rate of carbon loss decreased significantly as the time of gasification was increased at 850°C.en_US
