Abstract: Three Mg-Gd-Y-Nd-Zr alloys with different Nd/Gd ratios (0.2, 0.5 and 1) are prepared by metal mould casting method. The microstructures and mechanical properties have been investigated. The Nd/Gd ratio has a great influence on the volume fraction of the second phase of the Mg-Gd-Y-Nd-Zr alloys. Volume fraction of the second phase increases with the Nd/Gd ratio increasing. The mechanical properties of the alloys do not get decreased when the Nd/Gd ratio rises up. It should be ascribed to the equal cumulative effect of solid solution strengthening and second phase strengthening. The as-extruded Mg-6Gd-3Y-6Nd-0.6Zr has the best mechanical properties and lowest Gd addtion, and its ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are 336 MPa, 300 MPa and 2.5%, respectively.
