Abstract: Inorganic chlorides pretreated viscose rayon fabrics, carbonized and activated to different degrees of burn-off, have been evaluated by studying nitrogen adsorption at 77 K and carbon dioxide adsorption at 273 K and 298 K. The analysis using the method of Brunauer, Emmett and Teller, and Dubinin-Radushkevich equation indicates that the samples with low burn-off show molecular sieving effect and narrow pore size distribution, whereas the samples with high burn-off show wider pore size distribution and considerable mesoporosity. Increased uptake of inorganic chlorides during pretreatment results in increased pore volume of all types of pores till at very high degree of activation the ultramicropore formation gets reduced.
