The effects of fibre fineness, fabric weight and scrim on the filtration and mechanical properties of nonwoven needle-punched polyester filter fabrics have been studied. It is observed that the fine fibre fabrics exhibit higher filtration efficiency but at the cost of air drag, whereas coarser fibre fabrics show higher filtration efficiency for a given pressure drop level. Fabrics made from 3.3 dtex fibre give improved mechanical performance in terms of tenacity, abrasion resistance and bursting strength. As expected, with the increase in fabric weight, increased filtration efficiency with reduced air flow has been observed. However, the strength of the fabric in terms of tenacity is improved with the increase in fabric weight. Abrasion resistance and bursting strength are also increased with the increase in fabric weight. Presence of scrim improves the performance of filter fabric in terms of filtration efficiency and mechanical properties.en_US
