Abstract: Graft copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) has been carried out on jute using cerie ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator. The effects of initiator concentration, temperature, duration of reaction, monomer concentration and acid concentration have been studied to obtain the optimum conditions for grafting. The maximum grafting (80%) has been achieved at initiator conc., 0.04 mol/L; monomer conc., 0.45 mol/L; acid conc., 0.2 mol/L; temperature 40°C; and reaction time 2 h). The activation energy of graft copolymerization of HEMA onto jute has been found to be 30 kJ/mol. A suitable mechanism for grafting has also been proposed.
