Jute fibres have been chemically modified by alkali treatment, cyanoethylation, acetylation, acetylation- cyanoethylation, benzoylation and benzoylation-cyanoethylation and the parent and chemically modified jute fibres have been characterized by FTIR spectra. Moisture regain, tensile modulus and behaviour towards some chemical reagents of parent and chemically modified fibres have also been evaluated. The modified fibres show significant hydrophobicity, improved tensile modulus and good chemical resistance.en_US
