Abstract: The role of processing conditions on the structure of as-drawn polypropylene yarns and of polypropylene yarns containing 5% (by wt) polystyrene and the effect of processing conditions and the structural features on their shrinkage characteristics have been studied. It is observed that the crystal form and crystallinity have an important effect on the shrinkage characteristics of the as-drawn samples. The samples which contained a predominantly ɑ-monoclinic crystal form showed the maximum deviation from the predictions made by the stress-optical law.
