Six polyester yarn packages· were spun under different spinning conditions of suction and pressure using a laboratory open-end friction-spinning machine to observe the effect of back suction on fibre orientation and utilization in polyester open-end friction-spun yarns. An optical method based on tracer fibre technique was used to study the fibre orientation and utilization in the structure of the yarns, and a Textechno Statimat M Test Machine (a computerised tensile strength tester) was used to determine the tensile strength characteristics. It is observed that fibre orientation in the  yarns is poor and fibre utilization too low, but backsuction improves the fibre orientation and utilization in the spinning system. Backsuction increases the fibre extent, yarn tenacity, elongation, work of rupture and reduces the yarn diameter. The changes in fibre extent for most of the yarn packages are statistically significant at 99% level and the yarn tenacity too low for commercial utilization.en_US
