Bleached jute fabrics dyed with different classes of commonly used dyes have been tested for their mildew susceptibility and compared with undyed grey and bleached jute fabrics. Bleached jute fabrics dyed with metal-complex dyes and triphenylmethane dyes show significantly less visible fungal growth on exposure to fungal spores. Metal-complex dyed fabrics also suffer less strength loss due to mildew attack. Attempts have also been made to render jute fabrics dyed with direct dyes resistant to microbial attack by metallization with dilute solutions of copper salts. by impregnating insoluble copper salts and by treatment with benzalkonium chloride. Microbial resistance imparted and colour alteration caused by the above treatments are discussed.en_US
