Abstract: The effects of graft level and partial crosslinks formation on the thermal properties, electrical conductivity, moisture regain, mechanical properties, X-ray diffraction patterns and surface morphology of PGMA-grafted nylon-6 fibre have been evaluated. It has been found that melting area and moisture regain capacity decrease while Tg, weight remaining and electrical conductivity increase with the increase in graft level and these have been attributed to the formation of partial crosslinks. The tenacity decreases with the increase in graft level up to 40% and thereafter it starts increasing, goes through a maximum and then decreases. On the other hand, breaking elongation initially increases and then decreases gradually with the increase in graft level. X-ray diffraction patterns show that the polymer deposition occurs only in the amorphous regions of the fibre without any disturbance to the crystalline lattice. The chemical and structural properties of nylon-6 fibre improve on grafting.
