| Abstract: | The effect on the degree of fixation and relative intensity of disperse dyes (RIF) on polyester and its blend with cotton have been studied by thermosol method in presence of non-ionic surfactants in the padding bath. Fixation and RIF values decrease with the addition of surfactants as well as with the increase in the number of oxy-ethylene chain of the surfactants. The results suggest that dye-surfactant complex has a lower rate of vaporization due to decrease in the surface area as compared to dye alone. The mechanism of dye transfer is explained involving vaporization and diffusion through the substrate rather than melting, vaporization and diffusion as the dye gets solubilized in presence of some accelerants. |
