Abstract: Simultaneous dyeing and finishing of cotton fabric was carried out with acid dyes and dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU) using ammonium nitrate as catalyst. The fixation of dyes ranged from 70 to 85% depending upon the nature of the dye. The dyeings were fast to DMF-boil, indicating that the dye fixation was through covalent bonding with DMDHEU molecules acting as a bridge between the fibre chain molecule and the dye molecule. The extent of fixation was found to be governed by the amount of resin fixed, which, in turn, was dependent upon catalyst concentration and temperature and period of curing. The degree of resin finishing was depicted by the higher crease recovery angle values. The simultaneously dyed and resin-finished samples exhibited good fastness to washing, rubbing and bleaching.
