Abstract: Jute fibre and fabric were crosslinked with dirnethyloldihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU) using different catalysts and the major components of jute fibre were isolated from the crosslinked jute fibre. The major components of the untreated jute fibre were also isolated and then crosslinked with DMDHEU. The nitrogen contents and infrared spectra of the various fractions indicate the formation of covalent bond between DMDHEU and jute fibre components, viz. holocellulose, ɑ-cellulose and lignin, due to crosslinking reaction.
