Single fibre breaking tenacity and extension determined under the standard atmospheric (65%, 27°C) and wet conditions have been analyzed as a function of fibre linear density for twelve cotton varieties taken from the four cultivated species, Water-soaked fibres, irrespective of their linear density, show a very high breaking extension but the increase in their tenacity is influenced to some extent by linear density, In this respect, G. herbaceum cottons behave very anomalously, The fibres from these varieties show a high increase in breaking extension under wet condition and no increase in tenacity. Attempts have been made to explain the results in terms of differences in cell wall compactness, moisture regain and size and distribution of pores in cell wall of fibres belonging to different linear density groups.en_US
