Appropriate modifications in the cradles, nose bars and slides of top arm drafting were made at ring frame so as to obtain front bottom roller setting of 40 mm as against 44 mm in the normal drafting system. Initial studies at pilot plant showed a significant and consistent reduction in Uster U% and imperfections for coarse count yarns spun from short staple cottons. A range of yarn counts spun from two input hanks and a range of ring frame drafts showed a consistently lower level of U% and imperfections with modified drafting in all counts. Yarns spun on modified drafting system with higher ring frame draft were compared for Uster U% and imperfections with yarns spun on normal drafting system with lower ring frame draft. The variance draft line lay at a higher level with normal system as compared to modified system. Mill level studies confirmed the improvement in yarn imperfections and showed a significant reduction in B.C. winding breaks as a result of modifications.en_US
