Complexes of polymers, namely casein and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), with direct as well as acid dyes, were studied spectrophotometrically to determine the optimum binding ratios. Complex formation was confirmed by paper and thin-layer chromatography. The stability of casein-dye and PVP-dye complexes prepared in optimum binding ratios and stored at room temperature, was determined. Casein-dye complexes were unstable after 48 h; they developed odour and tended to precipitate. PYP-dye complexes were stable for many months. Hence, the PVP-dye complexes were applied as tinting agents on cellulosic (cotton, viscose) and wool fibre materials and their ease of removal were studied. The use of dye-polymer complexes as tints has the advantage of ease of removal, particularly for cellulosic and wool fibre materials even after heat-setting, steaming and alkaline steaming treatments.en_US
