Purified cotton, yarn and hosiery wastes were phosphorylated with different compositions of urea and phosphoric acid and cured at different temperatures for different durations. The IR spectra of the samples cured for different durations revealed a change in the esterification and cross-linking with curing time. Characteristics like specific gravity, swelling, moisture content, and ion-exchange capacity of these samples were determined. The ion-exchange capacity of the waste cotton samples was the highest and that of hosiery samples, the lowest. The results indicate that the wastes could be used for producing inexpensive cellulose-phosphate cationic exchangers.en_US
