| Abstract: | Method of extraction, microstructure and physical properties of the fibre from the so far unutilized weed Hibiscus panduraeformis (Hindi: Ban Bhindi) are reported. The ultimate tensile strengths (UTS) of water-extracted and alkali-extracted fibres were 476.1 and 443.3 MN/m2 with SD in UTS of 211.6 and 201.8 respectively, at a cross-head speed of 0.02 m/min. The moduli of water-extracted and alkali-extracted fibres were 35-40.7 and 31.9 GN/m2 respectively, which are comparable to those of banana and pineapple fibres. Physical and structural properties of the fibre are compared with those of other natural fibres. |
