Barky jute (W5 grade) was treated with the fungus Penicillium corylophilum Dierckx at 30 ± 1ᵒC for 10 days. Both untreated and fungus-treated samples, examined under a scanning electron microscope, showed that the fungus grew mainly on the pectin present on the surface of the bark and in the region between the fibre strands, without affecting the cell walls of the fibres. Chemical analysis of the treated samples confirmed this. These observations accord with those of earlier workers.en_US
