Abstract: The contents of various non-cellulosic impurities were assessed for a variety of fabric samples at various stages of pretreatments carried out industrially by different techniques. The absorbency of the fabrics, as well as whiteness/yellowness, was evaluated by different methods and the relative merits of the methods were evaluated. The wax content was correlated with the absorbency and the optimum level of wax removal to get good absorbency. The increase in whiteness was to some extent related to the removal of proteinous impurities during scouring, but oxidative destruction of colouring matter was responsible mainly for increase in whiteness on bleaching. Various pretreatment techniques carried out under control cause practically no degradation of cotton cel1ulose during scouring and within tolerable limits during bleaching.
