The causes of jerkey movements of heald shafts, invariably found with the tappet-shedding mechanism of jute looms, were investigated in detail by analyzing the profiles and dimensions of a number of shedding tappets, collected from different mills, and the movements of their heald shafts with a simple instrument developed in the Indian Jute Industries' Research Association. The analysis showed that all the tappets were highly defective and that the nature of heald movements was also far from perfect because of defective tappets as well as improper settings of the shedding mechanism. The performance of the looms was evaluated under the actual production conditions with the existing tappets of the mills and the standard tappets fabricated with proper dimensions for the same type of fabric and size of loom. Under identical weaving conditions the standard tappets reduced the warp breakage by 35-50%.en_US
