| Abstract: | A survey of fabric handle assessments carried out in India. Australia, New Zealand and Japan for 370 worsted-type men’s suiting materials have indicated good agreement between the assessments of Judges at a given country. Very good agreement has also been found between the assessments of national panels of judges. For the winter-weight fabrics all judges rated fabric handle using similar criteria, showing preference for smooth soft and full handling fabrics of low stiffness. Significant differences observed among the national panels of judges in the handle assessments for the summer-weight fabrics are attributed to the different preferences of the Japanese judges on the one hand and the Australian. New Zealand and Indian judges on the other. In particular. Japanese judges have a distinct preference for a crisp and stiff summer fabric handle while Australian. New Zealand and Indian judges consider these characteristics as undesirable features. Objective measurements-of fabric mechanical properties on a range of winter-weight worsted fabrics produced in India show that the overall fabric handle ranges from 2.3 to 4.7 on the scale 0-5.0 being unsatisfactory handle and 5. Excellent handle. |
