Abstract: Relationships between fibre friction and other fibre characteristics and the response of fibres having different levels of friction to processes like opening, carding and drawing have been studied using 17 cottons, varying widely in fibre characteristics, and three groups of cottons in untreated and treated conditions. It is observed that fibre length, fineness and strength are significantly correlated with fibre friction. The coefficient of friction of cotton increases from blowroom to carding and then decreases progressively with further processing. Higher friction increases card wastes, neps and sliver irregularity, whereas low friction shows the opposite trend. The overall performance of untreated cottons having lower friction appears to be better than that of treated cottons.
