Abstract: The effect of eight different commercially employed weaves and fabric constructional parameters on the desirable characteristics, viz. water absorbance, air permeability and fabric weight, and the functional characteristics, viz. tensile strength and abrasion resistance, of toweling fabrics has been investigated. Two parameters, viz. interlacement per weave repeat and fabric constant, were introduced and the relationships among these two parameters and different fabric characteristics were studied. The relationship between air permeability and water absorbance has been found to be linear. Among all the weaves, the reversible huck-a-back weave is found to be the best and 40ᵒ nominal square sett is best among the three square setts considered.
