An effective and safe fire retardant finish for cotton has been developed. Application of the finish involves phosphorylation of cotton employing suitable chemicals and its subsequent after treatment with mixtures of metal salts. The duration and temperature of application in the phosphorylation reaction have been standardized with respect to the fire retardant and strength properties of the treated fabric. The phosphorylated cotton was subjected to after treatment with zirconium, titanium and antimony salts used individually as well as in mixed compositions. Mixtures of these salts gave better results than those given by the individual salts. The durability of the finish against hard water and soaping has been studied.en_US
