| Abstract: | Flat and textured polyethylene terephthalate yarns were heat set under different conditions and their structures, mechanical properties and dye uptake characteristics were investigated. The flat yarn heat set at constant length was found to have better mechanical properties and lower dye uptake compared to the sample heat set while free to relax. The taut-annealed samples have higher orientation and there is no clear-cut phase separation; consequently, they have lower mobility, which, in turn, can explain their physical behaviour. In the textured yarn, the post-texturing heat treatment is shown to stabilize the structure and the resulting set appears to be related to the enhanced crystallinity. The crimp retraction of the textured yarn, contrary to normal expectation, does not correlate qualitatively with crystallinity. Samples with high decrimping modulus have been observed to give low crimp retraction; this aspect has been discussed in the paper. |
