Fibre dimensions like length, breadth, lumen size and thickness of the cell wall were studied for jute at different stages of growth of the plant. The breadth and cell wall thickness increase up to a certain stage and then become almost constant, but the length of the ultimate fibres shows a downward trend after a certain stage. The steadiness in lignifications and the absence of turgor pressure at a later stage might account for the shrinking of the ultimate fibres in the macerated state.en_US
