| Abstract: | The nature of some imperfections in jute fibre in green, retted and mill-processed states with reference to their technological importance is reported. In the meshy structure of jute fibre reed, the meshes or loops have been found to vary widely in size. In green state, primary filaments (cell chains) have been found to follow a wavy path; after retting, they become rectilinear with occasional bents. The meshes or loops are built up of irregular contacts between primary filaments and compound filaments. Such contacts appear to be separable, but in mill processing, fibre splitting is neither complete nor harmless. Transverse sections vary widely in the number of cells, contour, and the type of fissures and holes within them, both between and along individual filaments. The likely effects of such variations on strength, fineness, length and surface friction of individual filaments and hence on the spun yarn are discussed. The scope for further splitting of the filaments into finer filaments is suggested. |
