The effect of hydrolytic and aminolytic degradation on the structure of polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) films has been investigated. Changes in IR Crystallinity, number of OH and COOH end groups, and development of opacity have been taken as measures of the morphological changes occurring on hydrolysis. Increase in Crystallinity occurs on treatment with acids, alkalis and amines. End group analysis shows that chain scission takes place only under drastic conditions (high reagent concentration and high temperature of treatment). With all other reagents tried, except sulphuric acid, the film develops opacity, indicating that these reagents diffuse into the body of the film. In the case of hydrochloric acid, the attack seems to cause random depolymerization, while with sulphuric acid and alkalis, the end monomers seem to be liberated.en_US
