The main surface characteristics of hemp fibres subjected to different chemical treatments have been elucidated using scanning electron microscopy. The surface characteristics are improved and progressive cottonization is possible with depectinization treatments. Industrial cottonization is chemically feasible with subsequent delignification.en_US
