The levelling properties of four polymers, sodium alginate, polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl pyridine and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, have been evaluated and compared with those of a conventional anionic levelling agent. Sodium alginate and polyvinyl pyrrolidone, if used judiciously, do not affect the equilibrium dye uptake. It is shown that for the percentage levelling achieved and the corresponding lowering of the rate of dyeing, these agents show superior performance compared to the conventional levelling agents.en_US
