Abstract:     Earlier work on the nature of trash in cottons had shown that a large portion of trash in Indian cottons consists of tenaciously adhering seed coats which are difficult to remove in the blow room [Gupta, A.K. et at., Indian J. Text. Res., 3 (1978), 29]. The results of work done on the identification of the sources of seed coat generation and on optimizing processing at blow room and cants in the context of the new understanding about cleaning of cottons in relation to nature of trash are presented.
The high seed coat generation in Indian cottons has been attributed to unfavorable genetic and poor ginning conditions. Saw ginning generates more of seed coats than roller ginning. Shorter blow room sequences result in less neps in the yarn, particularly for fine long staple cottons. The nature and extent of cleaning at the tandem cards have been found to be nearly the same as at tile high production cards. Increase in flat speed gives higher cleaning efficiency, but changes in licker-in speed, front plate setting and crush roll pressure have negligible effect' on the cleaning efficiency of the card.
