Abstract: The levels of between and within bale variations while testing cotton fibres have been studied for five Indian and five foreign varieties of cotton. Based on these variations, a sampling scheme has been evolved and confidence limits have been specified. The error involved In uniformity ratio of fibre length has been worked out. The effect on cleaning efficiency of using shorter method for assessing trash content has been discussed. The variations obtained in testing the various fibres, characteristics have been compared with those reported from the American Society for Testing and Materials, United States Department of Agriculture and some other agencies.
