Abstract: Cellulosic fabrics were bonded using a neoprene-based adhesive modified with polystyrene and the effects of different parameters on the properties of the bonded fabrics were studied. With increase in polystyrene content in the adhesive and temperature, the breaking load, peel strength and bond separation period in boiling water increase. More or less similar behaviors were observed with increase in processing period and processing pressure. Increase in the molecular weight of polystyrene leads to increase in peel strength and bond separation period in boiling water without affecting any other property. The percentage moisture absorption decreases with increase in polystyrene content in the adhesive; it remains unchanged with increase in processing temperature and processing pressure. With increase in processing period, the percentage moisture content increases up to a certain stage and then starts decreasing. The possible reasons for the changes taking place are discussed.
