| Abstract: | The limitations of the existing methods for the extraction of dyes from dyed materials are brought out with supporting literature. An efficient technique based on aqueous preswelling of the dyed substrate and subsequent extraction of the dye with o-chlorophenol (OCP) is described. The effectiveness of this technique is supported by the experimental values for five selected vat dyes of different structures. The dyes are stable in boiling OCP and also during storage. The mechanism of dye removal from dyed cellophane is studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopes. |
