Abstract: An attempt has been made to apply by exhaustion method a crosslinking ageat like dimethylol dihydroxyethylene were (DMDHEU) on cotton from benzene- ethanol-water solvent system. The presence of water and its quantity were found to critical to get maximum exhaustion of DMDHEU exhaustion on pre-swollen cotton from the solvent mixture has been attributed to the availability of greater accessible surface area due to the opening of the fibre structure during the pre-swelling. The improvement in crease recovery properties indicates the diffusion of DMDHEU into the fibre structure during the exhaustion process. However, no advantage is achieved in respect of reduction in the losses in tensile strength as compared to the conventional pad-dry cure technique.
