Abstract: The cohesive and adhesive properties of four size ingredients, namely polyvinyl alcohol, Textilose*, carboxy-methylcellulose (CMC) and Carbo-size* have been studied. It is observed that PVA has the highest cohesion and adhesion values, followed, in general, by Carbo-size, Textilose and CMC. Use of Essotex oilϯ in the size mix reduces both cohesion and adhesion, although at lower concentrations of oil, the toughness of the size film is improved. Gum arabic, when used as a binder in moderate quantities, improves cohesion and adhesion. With higher concentrations of gum, both the properties deteriorate, probably due to the formation of cracks as the film becomes more and more brittle.
