| Abstract: | The physico-chemical characteristics of never-, controlled- and nature-dried cotton fibres are described. Studies on the kinetics of desorption of water from different fibre samples at different temperatures have shown that the rate of desorption decreases with increase in the period of drying. Further, the rate of water loss from the never-dried cotton is lower than that from the nature-dried cotton. The activation energy is higher for the desorption of water from never-dried cotton than that from nature-dried cotton at all temperatures and water contents. These results suggest that water is held by stronger intermolecular forces in never-dried cotton fibres. This finding has been substantiated by the observed higher values of heat of wetting for solvent exchanged-dried-never-dried cotton. Studies on alkali centrifuge, water retention, dye sorption and water sorption have shown more accessibility in the never-dried cotton. The lower accessibility of nature-dried cotton has been attributed to the development of inaccessible regions due to changes in packing and size of the fibrils on drying in nature without significantly altering the crystalline index of never-dried cotton. The accessibility of freeze-dried cotton is approximately equal to that of never-dried cotton. This tends to suggest that the degree of development of inaccessible regions by interfibrillar hydrogen bonding on drying never-dried cotton increases in the order: Never-dried > freeze-dried > dried at 300°C > dried at 25°C > nature dried cotton. Thus, drying by the freeze drying technique and by flash drying gives cotton with characteristics similar to those of never-dried cotton. This finding is in agreement with the 'authors' earlier findings [Indian J. Text. Res. 1 (1.976), 1]. |
