Abstract: Methylol derivatives of substituted acid amides, the application of which offers an attractive and simple way of imparting multiple finishes to cotton fabrics, were applied to cotton fibres. Various physico-chemical and mechanical properties of cotton fibres treated with methylol acid amides were investigated in detail. The advantage of carrying out this treatment on fibres is that the influence of yarn as well as fabric structure on the strength-recovery relationship of the treated materials is avoided and the results can be interpreted simply in terms of the structural changes in the fibres at the molecular and morphological levels. The results of the present investigation indicate that methylolated acid amides may cause a slight swelling of cotton cellulose, and undergo some polymerization in addition to chemisorption and limited crosslinking.
