Abstract: The X-ray diffraction technique has been applied to characterize 26 cotton samples on the basis of their crystallite orientation angles, which ranged from a minimum of 28° for Delcerro to a maximum of 43° for Hybrid-4. The orientation angles of these samples were correlated with their tensile strengths, the correlation coefficient working out to -0.520 significant at 0.01 level. To observe the variation of the orientation angles in the inter varietal and interspecific hybrids for investigating their genetic basis, a number of hybrids in the first filial generation were also subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis.
