The changes occurring in the dimensions of the cell wall of treatment with 18 sodium hydroxide solution have been examined by light microscopy. As a result of the treatment the fibres shrink longitudinally and the cell wall thickness increases, the increase being inversely related to the original thickness. These observations are indicative of the movement of the cell wall fibrils more towards the lumen then towards the surface.en_US
