Abstract: The carding forces originating in the opening and combing of the tufts of fibrous material between the moving wires of flats and cylinder were determined by transforming the carding forces into an electrical potential using strain gauges. The design of a device to sense the carding forces properly, the steps for obtaining a true signal and the experimental verification of the reliability of the measurement, are discussed.
