Abstract: A mineral oil-in-water emulsion is used for softening raw jute fibres prior to their processing and spinning into yarns. The method of application normally followed does not give a uniform distribution of oil in the fibres at the softening stage. The degree of non-uniformity of application of oil and its effect on the irregularity and tensile strength of the resultant yarns have been studied. The results show that the uniformity of oil application at the softening stage is not very important for improving the regularity and strength of yarns. But from the point of view of better control of oil content in the finished goods and prevention of occasional lapping during the carding and drawing operations, a more uniform application of emulsion to raw jute may be desirable.
