Available pre-1986 Great Barrier Reef coral-cover data were re-analysed and results compared with the pre-1986 subsets extracted from earlier studies ofBellwood et al.1 and from Bruno and Selig2. Correlations between the three compilations were low or insignificant, indicating low robustness in the original datasets for determining system-wide coral cover. Thus, trends in GBR coral cover based on the pre-1986 data should not be used.en_US
