Abstract: Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the most frequently identified antimicrobial drug resistant pathogen is capable of evading the biocidal action of antibiotics and representing new paradigms in pathogenesis, transmission and resistance. There is a growing medical need for new anti-MRSA molecules. The present study is aimed to find a potent molecule from a marine derived actinomycete. Anti-MRSA compound producing Micromonospora sp. ICN36 was isolated and identified using morphological, physiological and 16S rDNA sequencing analysis. Extract was prepared from agar plate fermentation in the nutrient optimized media and the antagonistic molecule was chromatographically separated. UV-Vis, Infra red and liquid chromatography-mass spectral characterization was performed and the anti-MRSA potential of the molecule is reported. A phenolic compound with efficient anti-MRSA potential and a moderate cytotoxic property was isolated from the extract of ICN36. The anti- MRSA compound had absorbance at 215 nm with the molecular mass of 524.29 Da and exhibited 0.5 µg/ml MIC with rapid killing of MRSA in the in vitro time-kill assay. The anti-MRSA compound was found to be active against HCT15 colon carcinoma cell lines in vitro. Micromonospora sp. ICN36 from the marine sediment is considered as a potential anti-MRSA agent which is the important perspective of the present study.
